The formula

• Pre-tax amount = Total ÷ (1 + rate)
• VAT amount = Total − Pre-tax amount
• For 5% VAT, divide by 1.05. For 10%, divide by 1.10. For 15%, divide by 1.15.
• This is different from simply taking 5%/10%/15% of the total — that would overstate the VAT, because the rate applies to the pre-tax amount, not the total.

This calculator applies a flat percentage extraction and doesn't account for mixed-rate invoices, zero-rated items, or exempt supplies within the same total. Confirm with your country's tax authority or an accountant for compliance-grade figures.
